Yes, Uber has car seats, but not on every ride and not in every city. You have to pick a special ride option, and it covers fewer kids than most parents expect. Lyft has a car seat too, in just one city. Here’s what each app covers, and what to do when your family doesn’t fit.

Does Uber Have Car Seats?
Only if you ask for one. A regular Uber ride doesn’t come with a car seat, and nothing in the app adds one to an UberX, Uber Comfort or Uber Black ride. The seat comes with its own option in the app, called Car Seat.
Where Uber Car Seat Is Available

Uber’s car seat page lists seven cities: New York, Los Angeles, Orlando, San Francisco, Miami, Washington D.C. and Atlanta. Uber’s help center adds Chicago. So if you’re asking whether Uber has car seats in Miami or Atlanta, the answer is yes.
Uber mentions rides to the airport, but it doesn’t say whether Car Seat can pick you up at one. Some parents report that the Car Seat option disappears once they add flight details, so check the app well before you fly.
How Much Uber Car Seat Costs
Uber’s help center says Car Seat trips cost $10 more than the UberX price. The app shows the full price, with the $10 in it, before you confirm the reservation.
With our car service with car seats, the first two seats are free, and your price covers everything, tolls and the chauffeur’s tip included. You see your exact price when you book. At the last step of booking you add a card, and our office charges it after the trip is complete.
Which Kids Uber Car Seat Fits

In New York, Uber uses a convertible seat, the kind that can face the back of the car for a baby and turn to face forward for a toddler. Here’s how Uber lists the limits for the Nuna seat it uses in New York (Orlando and D.C. use a different seat, an IMMI GO):
| Position | Child’s Weight | Child’s Height | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rear-facing | 5 to 50 pounds | 49 inches or less | From birth |
| Forward-facing | Up to 65 pounds | 49 inches or less | At least 2 years old |
Because the Nuna seat can face the rear, Uber can take a baby under 2 on a Car Seat ride in New York. The seat doesn’t cover three groups: babies under 5 pounds, kids over 65 pounds or taller than 49 inches, and a second child in the same car. Uber says parents must bring any extra seats, and it doesn’t list a booster.
If your baby is under 5 pounds, ask your pediatrician which seat to use, and bring that seat.
How to Book an Uber with a Car Seat
Uber Car Seat is by reservation only, so you can’t tap for one and have it at the door in five minutes. Here’s how to book it in the Uber app:
- Enter your pickup and drop-off.
- Scroll the ride options and pick Car Seat.
- Choose the date and time for your pickup.
- Check the price and confirm the reservation.
Uber doesn’t say how far ahead you need to book. If Car Seat doesn’t show, try a different pickup time.
On the day, the driver brings the seat and installs it. Uber says every Car Seat driver is trained on that seat, and that the car’s seat belt is the seat maker’s preferred way to install it. Then it’s your turn. Uber’s car seat page says parents are “solely responsible” for checking that the child fits the seat, inspecting the install and buckling the child in. Plan a few minutes at the curb for that.
One more detail from Uber’s FAQ: drivers may ask you to wipe your child’s hands if they’ve been eating, since the same seat carries other kids who may have food allergies.
Does Lyft Have Car Seats?

Yes, but only in New York City. Lyft’s help center lists an option called Car seat mode and says it’s “currently only available in New York City.” If it’s available, you’ll see Car seat as an option when you pick a ride. You request it like any Lyft ride.
It’s a different seat from Uber’s:
- The seat: one forward-facing IMMI Go seat. Lyft says it isn’t for children under 2.
- Who it fits: kids 22 to 48 pounds and 31 to 52 inches tall.
- What it costs: a $10 fee on top of the ride fare.
- The car: the same cars as a Standard Lyft ride. The driver installs the seat.
For a baby under 2, or on any other Lyft ride, bring your own seat.
Can You Bring Your Own Car Seat in an Uber or Lyft?

Yes, and on a regular Uber or a regular Lyft, you have to. Uber’s Community Guidelines say that where the law requires a car seat, “it’s the rider’s responsibility to provide and fit a suitable car seat.” They also say children 12 and under should ride in the back. Lyft’s community guidelines say the same thing in fewer words: you bring “the appropriate car seat” when traveling with kids.
The same guidelines let a driver cancel if a child doesn’t look like they fit the seat, or if the driver feels the child can’t ride safely in it. Show up with no seat at all, and plan on the driver canceling. Many drivers, by their own account, turn those rides down every time.
A few things make your own seat easier on an app ride:
- Tell the driver. Once a driver accepts, send a quick message in the app that you have a car seat. In driver forums, most drivers say they’re glad to see one.
- Pick a bigger car for a stroller. Choose Comfort or XL. A seat, a stroller and two suitcases rarely fit a small sedan’s trunk.
- Expect a small extra charge if the install takes a while. Uber’s website says the price the app shows before you book doesn’t include fees for the time the driver waits. In parents’ experience, it’s usually a few dollars.
- Use a padded bag. It keeps the straps clean and protects the seat if you check it on your flight.
- Plan the carry. The seat leaves with you, into the hotel or apartment.

When Uber Car Seat Won’t Work for Your Family

Some family trips fall outside what Uber and Lyft offer. Here’s what to do for each one:
- Two kids who both need seats. Uber and Lyft give you one seat per ride. Bring your own seat for the other child, or take two cars.
- A booster-age child. Neither Uber nor Lyft lists a booster. Bring your child’s own booster for an app ride, or book a car that brings one.
- Car Seat doesn’t show in the app. If Uber has no Car Seat ride for your time or pickup, book a car with us. Asking for a car seat doesn’t mean booking any earlier. Book a day ahead when you can. We can often take same-day rides too.
- Landing at the airport with kids and bags. With our JFK car service, your chauffeur tracks your flight and waits up to 60 minutes after you land at no charge.
- A big family with grandparents along. A Sprinter van keeps everyone and the luggage in one vehicle.
- The seat in the car isn’t right. Don’t ride. Uber’s FAQ says not to let your child ride if the seat isn’t properly installed. Lyft says to check the seat before you choose to take the ride, and to contact Lyft Support with concerns.
- The Car Seat driver shows up without a seat. Some parents report this. Contact Uber support in the app before you cancel, and ask for another car. Uber says canceling a reserved ride can cost you a fee.

Uber and Lyft Car Seats vs a Booked Car Service
Uber and Lyft can work for one child in a city where the seat is offered. Here’s how they compare with our car service, which brings the seats.
| Uber Car Seat | Lyft Car seat mode | Gotham Ride | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seats per car | 1 | 1 | Up to 2 free; a third costs extra (call our office) |
| Boosters | Not listed | Not listed | Free |
| Babies under 2 | Yes, rear-facing (New York seat) | No (age 2 and up) | Yes, rear-facing infant seats |
| The car | UberXL outside NYC; may be a sedan in NYC | A Standard Lyft car | Your pick of a Business Class SUV, a Cadillac Escalade or a Sprinter van for up to 14 (sedans hold one seat) |
| Airport pickups | Uber doesn’t say | Lyft doesn’t say | Yes, with flight tracking and up to 60 minutes of free waiting |
| Price | App price plus $10, tip not included | App price plus $10, tip not included | One price, tolls and the chauffeur’s tip included |
| The seat | The driver brings and installs it | The driver installs it | A rear-facing infant, convertible or booster seat, matched to each child’s age and weight and installed before pickup; you do the final check |
For two kids, a booster, an airport pickup or a big group, a booked car is the simpler choice, with every seat in place before you reach the curb.
Uber Car Seat in New York City

Inside the five boroughs, Uber Car Seat is on the list. Trips that start in Westchester, on Long Island or in New Jersey, Newark Airport included, may not show it yet. Uber lists the New York suburbs and New Jersey as “coming soon.”
Two things work differently in New York. Outside the city, Uber says a Car Seat trip comes in an UberXL. In New York, it doesn’t promise a larger car, so a sedan may show up. Uber also says its New York Car Seat drivers watch Nuna, the seat’s maker, show how to put the seat in.
New York is the one city where both Uber and Lyft offer a car seat. Here’s how the two compare:
| Uber Car Seat | Lyft Car seat mode | |

| Price | $10 added to the UberX price | $10 added to the ride fare |

| Height | 49 inches or less | 31 to 52 inches |
| Weight | 5 to 65 pounds | 22 to 48 pounds |
| Seats per ride | 1 | 1 (one child per ride) |
| Booking | Reservation only, in the Uber app | Pick Car seat and request the ride in the Lyft app |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Uber have car seats?

How much does Uber Car Seat cost?
Uber adds $10 to the UberX price for a car seat. You see the full price in the app before you confirm the reservation.
Will an Uber driver take a toddler without a car seat?
Uber’s Community Guidelines say that where the law requires a car seat, you provide and fit it. A driver can cancel if the child doesn’t appear to fit the seat or can’t ride safely in it. Bring your own seat or reserve an Uber Car Seat ride.
Will Uber take a baby with a car seat?
Yes. You can bring your own infant seat on any Uber ride. In New York, Uber Car Seat also comes with a seat that faces the rear for babies from 5 to 50 pounds. Lyft’s car seat is forward-facing and isn’t for children under 2.
Is there an Uber or Lyft booster seat for a 7-year-old?
No. Neither Uber nor Lyft lists a booster seat. Uber’s seat stops at 65 pounds and 49 inches, and Lyft’s at 48 pounds and 52 inches. A child past those limits needs your own booster.
Does Lyft have car seats?
Yes, in New York City only. Lyft’s Car seat mode adds one forward-facing seat for a child at least 2 years old, 22 to 48 pounds and 31 to 52 inches tall, for a $10 fee on the ride fare. It covers one child per ride. For a baby under 2 or a child over 48 pounds, bring your own seat.
Can I use my own car seat in a Lyft?
Yes. Lyft’s community guidelines say you bring the appropriate car seat when traveling with kids. Install it yourself and check it before the ride starts.
What if I have two kids who need car seats?
Uber and Lyft give you one car seat per ride, so you bring the second seat or take two cars. Another option is a booked car service that installs both seats.
Does Gotham Ride provide car seats?
Yes. Child seats and boosters are free. Give us each child’s age and weight at booking and the seat is installed before the car reaches you. Our SUVs and vans carry up to two free seats, and sedans carry one.
