What Is Uber Black?
Uber Black is the premium ride in the Uber app. You get a late-model luxury car with a highly rated driver. It has two sizes:
- Uber Black: a luxury sedan for up to 4 riders.
- Uber Black SUV: a large SUV for up to 6 riders. Many people search for this as the “black truck Uber.”
You can order it right away, or schedule it ahead with Uber Reserve. On a regular request, the driver waits up to 5 minutes at the airport. Wait fees start after 2 minutes. Away from the airport, the driver waits up to 15 minutes and fees start after 5.
In New York City, every Uber Black driver needs a TLC license and every car needs TLC plates. That is the same rule a car service follows. The real differences are the price, the wait time and who answers the phone when something goes wrong.
What Car Will You Get?

Uber posts recent average fares for each airport. The numbers below are Uber’s averages to Midtown West for the past month, checked in October 2026. They are not fixed prices, and they do not include the tip.

How much more is Uber Black than UberX?
From JFK and LaGuardia, Uber Black averaged about 30% more than UberX. From Newark it averaged about twice as much. Black SUV costs more again. On a busy night, surge pricing can push any of these well past the average.
What the Uber price leaves out
- The tip. Add 15% to 20%. A $156 JFK ride becomes about $179 to $187.
- Surge. The price you see goes up when demand is high, like a Thursday evening or a holiday weekend.
- Wait time. After the short free window, you pay by the minute.

Two details on our side. Meet and greet is a flat $39 on the Business Class Sedan and the Comfort Van. If you wait past the free time, we bill in 15-minute steps at the published hourly rate. Our cancellation policy charges the full fare inside 24 hours, but if your airline cancels or diverts your flight, you get a full refund or free rebooking.
What About Uber Reserve?
Uber Reserve is Uber’s answer to a car service. You book a ride from 30 minutes to 90 days ahead. For airport pickups you enter your flight, and Uber Black drivers wait up to 60 minutes after you land. You can cancel for free up to 60 minutes before pickup.
That closes much of the gap. Four things are still different:
- A reservation fee. Uber builds it into the price, and it changes by city and ride type.
- The tip is still extra. Our price already includes it.
- The price can move. Uber says the fare can change if you add a stop, change the destination, or the route changes a lot.
- Sedan or SUV only on Black. No vans, no Sprinter and no child seats.
If you are one person with a carry-on and you book ahead, Uber Reserve on Black is a fair option. If you have kids, a group, a client to impress or a lot of luggage, a car service is easier.
When Uber Black Is the Better Pick
